Indian Institute of Public Health 5th Batch of    Short-term Training on Qualitative Research Methods in Health & Medical Research 25th  to 27th  April 2012

We   are   pleased to  inform   you  that  IIPHG  is  organising   the  5th    batch   of   short-term training   in   Qualitative   Research   Methods   in   health   and   medical   research   between 25th  and 27th  of April 2012. In public health and medicine qualitative research methods are being   used   in   a   wide   range   of   situation   from   exploratory   studies,   process   documentation, monitoring and assessment of field interventions, health technology assessment, etc.

It is also being used   alongside RCTs as adjunct procedures for various   reasons such as drafting  and testing   of   research   protocols,   explaining   findings,   and   formation   and   working  with community advisory groups for field trials etc. The strength of QRM lies in bringing out insiders’  meanings,  capturing  processes  and  bringing  out  the  contexts  in  which events happen. They add meaning to otherwise de-contextualised data and enhance transferability of interventions across contexts.

Objectives of the program

1. To make participants gain an understanding of the theoretical basis of QRMs.
2. To   highlight   the   scope   of   using   QRMs   in   the   field   of   public   health,   health  management and medical research.
3. To   equip   the   participants  with   knowledge   and   skill   of   using  data   collection  methods such as in-depth interviews, FGD, case study and rapid procedures
4. To build the capacity of participants in drafting research design using QRMs and to analyse qualitative data
5. To train the participants in use of computers to analyse qualitative data

• Session I        Introduction: Theoretical basis, nature and scope of QRMs
• Session II      Methods of data collection-I: Key informant interview
• Session III    Methods of data collection-II: FGD; mock FGD
•  Session IV     Methods of data collection-III: Case study & other methods 

Day 2

• Session V             Rigour and validity in qualitative research
• Session VI            Analysis of qualitative data
• Session VII          Types of qualitative data analysis
• Session VIII        Publishing a qualitative study 

Day 3

• Session IX     Computer based analysis of qualitatve data
• Session X       Computer based analysis of qualitatve data
• Session XI     Computer based analysis of qualitatve data
• Session XII   Computer based analysis of qualitatve data 

Eligibility
This   programme   will   be   useful   to   graduate   /   post   graduate   students   of   any systems of medicine, public health officials, independent scholars or NGO members working in the area of   public   health,   social  science   and   development professionals.  Any   graduate   /professional   working   in   the   area   of   public   health   or   medicine   is   eligible   to   apply.

Maximum number of Participants is thirty.

Course fee
Rs.  6000  inclusive   of  course   fee,  lunch,   refreshments   and   workshop   materials  per participant; accommodation – an additional fee of Rs. 350 per day for stay on twin sharing basis and food. Fee to be paid as DD /  Cheque drawn in favour of Indian Institute of Public Health – Gandhinagar payable at Ahmedabad. A limited number of part / full  tuition fee waiver   are available for registered students on means-cum-merit basis and for five or more  registrationfrom a  same institute.
